What is LTC?
Who is it for?
- Long term care
- For people who need 24hr skilled care
What is a TERMINAL ILLNESS?
An illness that will eventually cause death.
What is a CHRONIC condition?
A condition that lasts a long time or a lifetime.
Why are people referred to as “residents” in LTC facilites?
Because the facility is where they live.
ACUTE care
Short term, immediate care
ADLs - give examples
Activities of daily living
Ex. Bathing, eat & drinking, elimination
What is MEDICARE?

What are NAs NOT allowed to do?
- Insert or remove tubes
- Give tube feedings
- Change sterile dressings
What is a POLICY?
A course of action that happens when certain circumstances occur
What is a PROCEDURE?
A method, or way, of doing something
What is OBRA?
- Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act
- set minimum standards for nursing assistant training
What should you do if you see another caregiver, family member, or resident ABUSING a resident?
Report it immediately to the charge nurse!
Can you IGNORE abuse towards residents?
NO. It is the law to report any and all abuse.
What is an OMBUDSMAN?
- A legal advocate for residents
What is HIPPA?
- Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
- helps keep health information private and secure
What happens if you do something and DON’T document/chart it?
It legally never happened.
WHEN should you document care?
Immediately after the care was given.
What is MDS?
- Minimum Data Set
- detailed form with guidelines to assess residents
WHEN must nurses complete the MDS?
- within 14 days of admission
- every year
What is an INCIDENT REPORT?
A report that documents the incident and the response to it
What are examples of incidents?
- A resident falls
- NA makes a mistake during care
- Anything that happened that made the NA feel unsafe or uncomfortable
- NA gets injured on the job
- NA exposed to blood or bodily fluids
People who live in LTC facilities are usually called:
Residents
How many parts does Medicare have?
What do they pay for?
- 4 parts
- helps pay for any medically necessary expenses
What is PHI?
- Protected Health Information
- Ex. Name, address, phone number, etc.
