Chapter 1: Matter and Classification Flashcards
Learn about all things Matter
What is Matter?
Matter can be regarded as anything that occupies space and has mass.
What is a Substance?
A substance is a form of matter that has a constant composition and distinct properties.
What is a mixture?
- A mixture is something that consists of at least two different substances.
- The substances retain their invidual properties.
- The substances are not chemically bonded together.
How are mixtures seperated?
By physical means
What are the two different types of mixtures?
Homogeneous and Heterogeneous mixtures.
What is a Homogeneous mixture?
- Mixtures have a uniform composition.
- Also known as solution
What is the solvent in a homogeneous mixtures?
The substance present in the largest amount in a homogeneous mixture.
What is the solute in a mixture?
The solute is the substance present in the smaller amount in the homogeneous mixture.
What is a Heterogeneous mixture?
- Has a non-uniform composition
- The substances do not dissolve in each other.
What are supensions?
- A heterogeneous mixture of a solid mixed with a liquid.
- Can be seperated using filtration.
Define Miscible.
- Two liquids that mix completely.
- Form a homogeneous mixture.
Define immiscible
- Liquids that do not mix
- Form a heterogeneous mixture.
Define Emulsion
- Two immiscible liquids shaken together
- The solute breaks into small droplets and forms a milky-looking liquid.
What is a pure substance?
- Consists of only one type of substance
- Can be element or compound
What is an element?
- The simplest of pure substances
- Can’t be broken down into simpler substances
What is an Atom?
- Building blocks of matter
- Smallest particle that retains the properties of its element.
Define what a compound is.
- Pure substance made up of two or more elements bonded together through chemical means.
- Have fixed chemical composition
- Substances bonded at constant ratio
How do you separate compounds?
Separated by chemical means
Define malleable.
Substance easily shaped or formed by hammering.
Define ductile.
Substance can be stretched or drawn into wires.
What are semi-metals?
Substances that exhibit both metal and non-metal properties.
What is an electrical conductor?
Substance that conducts electricity easily.
What is an electrical insulator?
Substance that does not allow electricity to flow through
What is a semi-conductor?
Materials with an electrical conductivity between metals and non-metals
Define heat.
Spontaneous flow of thermal energy from a hotter object to a cooler object.
What’s a thermal conductor?
Good conductors of heat.
Define thermal insulator.
Poor conductors of heat.
What are the only 3 elements that are magnetic?
- Iron
- Nickel
- Cobalt
