Chapter 1: Matter and Classification Flashcards
Learn about all things Matter
What is Matter?
Matter can be regarded as anything that occupies space and has mass.
What is a Substance?
A substance is a form of matter that has a constant composition and distinct properties.
What is a mixture?
- A mixture is something that consists of at least two different substances.
- The substances retain their invidual properties.
- The substances are not chemically bonded together.
How are mixtures seperated?
By physical means
What are the two different types of mixtures?
Homogeneous and Heterogeneous mixtures.
What is a Homogeneous mixture?
- Mixtures have a uniform composition.
- Also known as solution
What is the solvent in a homogeneous mixtures?
The substance present in the largest amount in a homogeneous mixture.
What is the solute in a mixture?
The solute is the substance present in the smaller amount in the homogeneous mixture.
What is a Heterogeneous mixture?
- Has a non-uniform composition
- The substances do not dissolve in each other.
What are supensions?
- A heterogeneous mixture of a solid mixed with a liquid.
- Can be seperated using filtration.
Define Miscible.
- Two liquids that mix completely.
- Form a homogeneous mixture.
Define immiscible
- Liquids that do not mix
- Form a heterogeneous mixture.
Define Emulsion
- Two immiscible liquids shaken together
- The solute breaks into small droplets and forms a milky-looking liquid.
What is a pure substance?
- Consists of only one type of substance
- Can be element or compound
What is an element?
- The simplest of pure substances
- Can’t be broken down into simpler substances
