Chapter 1 - Matter Flashcards
what is matter?
Anything that has mass , occupies space and can be perceived by us is known as matter
Give an example of resistance
if you try to walk through an air storm or try to lift a heavy rock , you will experience resistance
What is matter made up of?
Matter is made up of tiny particles called atoms or molecules
What is an atom?
The smallest particle of matter that exhibits all the properties of matter and does not have an independent existence is called an atom
What is a molecule?
The smallest particle of matter that exhibits all the properties of matter and has an independent existence is called a molecule
What are the charcteristics of matter?
⁕ The particles of matter are very small
⁕ The particles of matter have spaces in between them
called interparticle or intermolecular spaces
⁕The particles of matter are in a constant motion as they
possess kinetic energy
⁕The particles of matter attract each other because there is
an invisible force of attraction between the particles of
matter
What is Brownian motion?
The zig-zag random motion of suspended particles on the surface of the liquid or in air is called Brownian motion
What is Diffusion?
The intermixing of two or more substances due to their motion of their particles to form a uniform mixture is called diffusion
What are the three states of matter?
Solid , Liquid and Gas
Define kinetic theory of matter?
The theory stating that any substance weather solid , liquid or gas is made up of tiny particles called atoms , molecules and ions which are in constant motion is called “THE KINETIC THEORY OF MATTER”
List the postulates of the KINETIC THEORY OF MATTER
⁕Matter is made of very small particles called atoms and molecules
⁕The constituent particles of a kind of matter are identical in all respects
⁕ These particles have spaces or gaps in between them which are known as interparticle or intermolecular force of attraction
⁕There exists a force of attraction between the particles of matter that holds them together. this force of attraction is known as interparticle or intermolecular force of attraction
⁕Particles of matter are always in a state of random motion and possess kinetic energy , which increases with an increase in temperature and vice-versa
What is INTERCONVERSION OF STATES OF MATTER?
The phenomenon of change of one state of matter to another and then back to the original state without any change in its chemical composition is called INTERCONVERSION OF STATES OF MATTER
The change in state of matter is caused by-
⁕Change in temperature
⁕Change is pressure
Define LAW OF CONSERVATION OF MASS
Matter can neither be created nor be destroyed in a chemical reaction
In a chemical reaction, the total mass of the reactants is equal to the total mass of products
