Chapter 1 : Language of Veterinary Parasitology Flashcards
What does Symbiosis mean?
living together
What is a symbiont?
a member of the symbiotic relationship
What are the 5 types of symbiotic relationships?
Predator-Prey, Phoresis, Mutualism, Commensalism, Parasitism
What is the Phoresis symbiotic relationship?
the small member of the relationship is mechanically carried by the larger.
What is the Commensalism symbiotic relationship?
one symbiont benefits from the from the relationship and the other neither benefits or is hurt
Parasitiasis
When a parasite is present on or within a host and is potentially pathogenic but the host shows no outward clinical signs
Mutualism
both organisms in the symbiotic relationship benefit
Parasitosis
When a parasite is present on or within a host and does produce obvious injury or harm to the host animal
Erratic (Aberrant) Parasite
when a parasite wanders from its usual site of infection into and organ or location it does not usually live
Incidental Parasite
When a parasite is found in a host it does not usually live
Facultative Parasites
Organisms that are “free-living” but become parasitic in certain hosts
Obligatory Parasite
A parasite that must live a parasitic existence
Periodic Parasite
A parasite that can make frequent short visits to its host to obtain nourishment or other benefits
Pseudoparasites
living creatures or objects that are not parasitic but are mistaken or identified as one
Definitive Host
The host that harbors the adult, sexual, or mature stages of the parasite
Intermediate Host
The host that harbors the juvenile, larval, immature, or asexual stages of the parasite
Encysted
In suspended animation
Transport/Paratenic Host
a special type of intermediate host that remains in suspended animation (encysted) within the host’s tissues
Reservoir Host
A vertebrate host in which a parasite or disease occurs in nature and is a source of infection for humans and domestic animals
Homoxenous/Monoxenous Parasite
a parasite that infects only one type of host
Stenoxenous Parasite
Has a narrow host range i.e. one species
Euryxenous
Has a very broad host range
Zoonosis
Any disease or parasite that is transmissible from animals to humans
Linnaean Classification Scheme
Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Subphylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
