Communication

Communications
The methods of distributing messages to others through various channels
Human communication
The process of making sense out of the world and sharing that sense with others by creating meaning through verbal and nonverbal messages
Symbol
A word, sound, gesture, or visual image that represents a thought, concept, object, or experience
Content dimension
New info, or suggested actions a communicator wishes to express.
Relationship dimension
Offers cues about emotions, amount of power and control the speaker directs toward others
Rule
Indicates what behavior is preferred
Communication models
Visual depictions of major elements in the communication process
Source
The originator of a thought that puts it into a code to be understood by the reciever
Encoding
Translating ideas into code
Decoding
Interpreting ideas that have been translated into code
Reciever
The person who decodes a message and attempts to make sense of what the source has encoded.
Message
Written, spokes, and unspoken elements of communication which people assign meaning
Channel
The pathway through messages are sent
Noise
Interference that hinders accurate encoding or decoding
Feedback
The response to a message
Context
The physical, historical, psychological, and cultural influences on communication
Critical/cultural approach to communication
Focuses on messages about power, resistance and culture. Encourages questions and invites challenges to societal issues.
Communication competence
The ability to communicate appropriately and successfully
Ethics
Beliefs and values by which we determine what is right and wrong
Mediated communication
Any communication that is carried out not face-to-face
Mass communication
Accomplished through mediated message and sent to many at once
Interpersonal communication
Occurs simultaneously between to trying to mutually influence each other
Impersonal communication
Treats people as objects or only responds to their roles
Small group communication
3-15 people.mutually influencing each other to achieve an common goal.
Presentation communication
A speaker addressing a crowd with the purpose to inform, entertain, or persuade.

Using symbols to influence or persuade others

Studying communication withing organizations

Language
Symbols structured by rules for people to understand eachother
Nonverbal communication
Written or spoken means of communication

Being focused on meeting the needs of others while maintaining ones own personal integrity
