Chapter 1, Introduction to matter Flashcards
Matter
anything that has mass and takes up space
Chemistry
the study of matter and how matter changes
substance
is a single kind of matter that is pure, meaning it always has a specific makeup or composition
Physical property
is a characteristic of a substance that can change, but the changes do not produce a different substance
Chemical property
is a characteristic of a substance that describes the ability to change into a different substance
weight
the measure of the force of gravity on you
mass
the amount of matter in an object
International System of Units
metric system
volume
the amount of space that matter occupies
density
a measure of how much mass of a substance is contained in a given volume
element
is a substance that can not be broken down into other substances by chemical or physical means
atom
is the basic particle from which all elements are made
chemical bond
when two atoms combine
molecule
a group of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds
compound
is a substance made of two or more elements that are chemically combined in a set ratio
chemical formula
symbols to show the elements in the compound and the ratio of atoms
mixture
is made of two or more substances that are together in the same place, but their atoms are not chemically bonded
heterogeneous mixture
you can see two different parts and they can be easily seperated out
homogeneous mixture
the substances involved are so evenly mixed that you can’t see the different parts
physical change
alters the form or appearance of matter but does not turn substance in the matter into a different substance
chemical change
a change in the matter that produces one or more new substanes
law of conservation of mass
the fact that matter is not created or destroyed in any chemical or physical change
Temperature
a measure of how hot or cold something is
Thermal energy
is the total energy of the motion of all of the particles in an object
endothermic chance
a change in which energy is absorbed
exothermic change
a change in which energy is relased
chemical energy
the energy stored in the chemical bonds between atoms
