Chapter 1 Introduction to Biology Flashcards
What is Biology?
The scientific study of life ( living organisms)
What are the properties of life?
Order, Sensitivity, Reproduction, Adaptation, Growth and development, Regulation, Homeostasis, and Energy processing.
Of the properties of life, what is the definition of Order?
Organisms are highly organized sturctures that consist of one or more cells.
Of the properties of life, what is the definition of Sensitivity?
Ability to respond to both internal and external stimuli.
Of the properties of life, what is the definition of Reproduction?
The ability of organisms to pass their genetic material onto future generations.
In what two ways can reproduction happen?
Asexual (most singled celled organisms) or Sexual (most multicellular organism).
Of the properties of life, define Growth and development?
Organisms will grow and develop based on the specific genes inherited from parental DNA
Of the properties of life, define Regulation?
All living things require regulatory mechanisms to control their internal functions to ensure the body functions properly. Example: Human organ systems.
Of the properties of life, define Homeostasis?
The ability of an organism to maintain a constant internal condition despite a constantly changing external environment; Example: Body temp
Of the properties of life, define Energy Processing?
All living things obtain their energy from somewhere to power their cellular activities.
Of the properties of life with Energy processing, what are the two categories
Autotrophs (producers) which can generate their own food by photosynthesis (from the sun) and Heterotrophs (consumers and decomposers) obtain energy from consuming food. ( They use the energy to fuel many cellular chemical processes).
Of the properties of life with Energy processing, what does Metabolism mean?
The sum of all chemical reactions in an organism.
