Chapter 1 - Introduction to Anatomy & Physiology Flashcards
The Hierarchy of Life
Smallest - Largest
Atoms, Molecules, Macromolecules, Organelle, Cells, Tissue, Organ, Organ System, Organism
Characteristics of Life
Organization Cellular Composition Metabolism & Excretion Responsiveness & Movement Homeostasis Development Reproduction Evolution
Multicellular Organism
Organism that consist of more than one cell. (e.q. Humans)
Organ Systems
Multiple organs with a common purpose. (e.q. Nervous system, Skeletal system)
Organ
A structure that’s made up of two or more types of tissue that work together to carry out a specific task. (e.q. Stomach, heart)
Tissue
A mass of similar cells & cell products that forms a discrete region of an organ & perform a specific function. (e.q. Cuboidal cells, stratified cells)
Cells
A collection of cytoplasm and various cellular organelles; the most specific unit of life. (i.e. the lowest hierarchical level capable of being alive on its own)
Ex: blood cells, skin cells
Organelle
Microscopic structures in a cell that carry out its individual functions. (e.q. mitochondria)
Macromolecules
A collection of molecules with repeating subunits; in other words, they can get very large. (e.q. proteins, fats, DNA)
Molecules
A particle composed of at least two atoms. (e.q. oxygen, carbon)
Atoms
The smallest particles with unique chemical identity. (e.q. hydrogen, iron)
Matter
Anything which occupies space and has mass. (e.q. solids)
