Chapter 1: Introduction Flashcards
Anatomic nomenclature
The terms used to name body components
Anatomy
The science of body structure. Synonymous with morphology
Auscultation
Evaluation of body structures based on the noise they produce.
Biological macromolecules
Large organic molecules synthesized from smaller organic compounds by living organisms
1: protein
2: lipid
3: polysaccharide (carbohydrates)
4: nuclei acids
Cell
Unit of living matter surrounded by a semi permeable membrane.
Diagnostic imaging
Techniques used to demonstrate the relationship of body components without dissection.
Dissection
Methodically cutting the body apart to study its individual components
Lumen
The hollow space lining a tubular organ
Mucous membrane (mucosa)
Lining layer of tubular organs in the body’s visceral systems.
Organ
A body structure composed of at least two different tissues.
Organelle
A sub component of a cell composed of biological macromolecules.
Palpation
The identification and study of body parts by feel
Parenchyma
The functional part of an organ
Principles of morphology
Structural design of the body
1: tubulation (hollowness continuing from organ to organ)
2: stratification (layering)
3: zygomorphism (bilateral symmetry)
4: metemerism (linear sequencing)
5: cavitation (space between organs)
Serous membrane (serosa)
Transparent membrane that lines closed body cavities.
