Chapter 1 - Introduction Flashcards
Physiology
Study of how the body functions
Anatomy
Study of the structure of the body
Who was Hippocrates?
- Father of medicine
* Diseases attributed to natural causes
What did Aristotle write?
Complex structures formed from smaller, simpler components
What did Galen do?
Looked at animal cadavers and deduced human anatomy.
What is the Hierarchy of Complexity?
Organism ⬇️ Organ Systems ⬇️ Organs ⬇️ Tissues ⬇️ Cells ⬇️ Organelles ⬇️ Molecules ⬇️ Atoms
What is an organ system?
- Group of organs with a unique, collective function.
* We have 11
What are organs?
- Composed of two or more types of tissue
* Has a specific function
What are tissues?
- Mass of similar cells and cell products
* Performs a specific function
What are cells?
• The smallest units of life that can carry out a function
What are organelles?
• Microscopic structures within a cell that contribute to it’s function
What are organelles made up of?
Molecules
Ex. Proteins and fats
What are molecules made up of?
Atoms
What are the characteristics of life?
- Organization
- Compartmentalization of functions
- Metabolism (Anabolism+Catabolism)
- Responsiveness to stimuli
- Homeostasis
- Development (differentiation & growth)
- Reproduction
- Evolution
What is Anabolism?
Formation of larger molecules from smaller building blocks
