Cross-culture Psychology
The study of relationships between the cultural context of human development and the behaviors that become established in mannerisms of individuals growing up in a certain culture.
Human Development
Are the changes in physical, psychological, and social behavior as experienced by individuals across the lifespan from conception to death.
Cross-culture Human Development
Cultural similarities and differences in the developmental processes and their outcomes as expressed by behavior in individuals and groups
Culture
The cluster of learned and shared beliefs, values, behaviors, symbols, and attitudes that are characteristic of a particular group of people and that are communicated from one generation to another
Ethnocentrism
The tendency to judge other people and cultures by the standards of one’s own culture and to believe that the behavior, customs, norms, values, and other characteristics of one’s own group are natural, valid, and correct while those of others are unnatural, invalid, and incorrect.
Independent Variable (IV)
The condition introduced into or systematically manipulated in an experiment by the researcher
Dependent Variable (DV)
The subjects response or the behavior being measured in an experiment

Emic Approach
(Insider Approach)
Focus on a single culture, using criteria that are thought to be relative to it, and studies behavior from WITHIN the system itself, making no cross-cultural inferences w/ regard to the universality of any observations
Etic Approach
(Outsider Approach)
Looks at several cultures, comparing and contrasting them using criteria thought to be absolute or universal, and studies behavior from OUTSIDE the system
Individualism-Collectivism
Approach used to describe, explain, and understand similarities and differences in a variety of cultural contexts.
Individualist Culture
Are made up of people who are responsible to themselves and their family and whose individual achievement of paramount
Collectivist Culture
Consist of people who consider the group to be the most important with an emphasis on traditions, cooperation, and a sharing of common goals and values
Developmental Niche
Provides a framework for understanding how various aspects of a culture guide the developmental process by focusing on the child as the unit of analysis w/in his/her sociocultural setting or context.
