I will be able to explain the function of the NATA and BOC in preparing an individual to practice in the profession of athletic training. I will be able to describe the standards of professional practice, present information on the team approach in the delivery of care, and recognize legal liabilities in delivering care relative to reducing the risk of litigation.
What is the mission of the BOC?
Identifying for the public, quality health care professionals through a system of certification, adjudication, standards of practice and continuing competency program.
What is Sports Medicine?
An area of healthcare and special services that applies medical and scientific knowledge to prevent, recognize, assess, manage, and rehabilitate injuries or illnesses related to sport, exercise, or recreational activity and, in doing so, enhances health fitness and performance of the participant.
What is the Role Delineation Study (RD)?
Published by the BOC, it defines the current entry-level knowledge, skills, and abilities required for practice in the profession of athletic training.
What are the major performance domains?
- Prevention
- Clinical evaluation and diagnosis
- Immediate care
- Treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning.

What is standard of care?
What another individual practicing in that profession would have done in the same or similar circumstance.
What is scope of care?
Outlines the role and responsibilities of an individual and what should be learned.
What is malfeasance?
Occurs when an individual commits an act that is not their responsibility to perform.
What is misfeasance?
Occurs when an individual commits an act that is their duty to perform but either does the wrong procedure or the correct one in an improper manner.
What is nonfeasance?
Occurs when an individual fails to perform their legal duty of care.
What is gross negligence?
Occurs when an individual has total disregard for the safety of others.
What are six precautionary steps to reduce the risk of litigation?
- Failure to Warn.
- Foreseeability of Harm.

- Product Liability.
- Confidentiality.
What is implied warranty versus expressed warranty?
Equipment will not cause injury to an individual if used for its intended purpose.
A written guarantee that the product is safe to use.
What is comparative negligence?
The degree of negligence on the part of both the plaintiff and defendant.
What are the legal defenses that many athletic trainers rely on?

What are the five basic ethical principles for athletic trainers?
- Members shall respect the rights, welfare, and dignity of all individuals.
- Members shall comply with the laws and regulations governing the practice of athletic training.
- Members shall accept responsibility for the exercise of sound judgement.
- Members shall maintain and promote high standards in the provision of services.
- Members shall not engage in any form of conduct that constitutes a conflict of interest or reflects adversely on the profession.
