Chapter 1 - Infection Control Flashcards
Noscomial
(of a disease) Originating in a hospital
Pathogens
microorganisms that cause disease
Reservoir
An area where the infectious agent can live
Anaerobic
live and reproduce in the absence of oxygen
Asepsis
absence of disease producing microorganisms or pathogens
Antisepesis
antiseptics prevent of inhibit growth of pathogenic organisms but are not effective against spores and virus
Causative agent
pathogen like a virus
Disinfection
process used to destroy microorganisms; destroys all pathogenic organisms except spores
Endogenous
infection or disease originating within the body
Fomites
objects contaminated with infectious material that contain pathogens
Fungi
plant-like organisms (mold and yeasts) that can cause infection
Microbe
unicellular or small multicellular organisms including bacteria, viruses and some worms
Nonpathogens
Microorganisms that are part of the normal flora of the body and are beneficial in maintaining certain body processes
Susceptible host
a person likely to get an infection or disease (body defenses are weak)
Viruses
smallest microorganisms, visible only using electron microscope
Protective isolation
methods used to protect certain patients from organisms present in the environment
Sterilization
the process that completely destroys all microorganisms, including spores
Communicable disease
caused by a pathogenic organism that can be easily transmitted to others
Contact precautions
practices used to prevent spread of disease by direct or indirect contact
Transmission bases (isolation) precautions
2nd tier precautions used with mode of infection
Droplet precautions
must be followed for a patient known or suspected to be infected with pathogens transmitted by large-particle droplets expelled during coughing, sneezing, talking or laughing
PPE
Personal protective equipment i.e. gloves, mask, googles and clinical attire
Airborne precautions
methods of infection control that must be used for patients known or suspected to be infected with pathogens transmitted by airborne droplet nuclei
Microorganism
a small living organism that is not visible to the naked eye. must be viewed under microscope
