Contact with the Present Moment
- “be here now”
- attend to physical world and/or psychological world
- engaging fully in experience
- flexibly paying attention to the present moment
- narrow/broaden/shift/sustain focus
Defusion (how to refer to it with clients, and what it means)
“watch your thinking”
step back (detach) from thoughts/images/memories
observe your thinking
Acceptance
- opening up to what’s happening within
- make room for unwanted mental experiences
- let them flow through if/when it helps us act effectively and improve our lives
Self-as-Context (definition and client-friendly names)
“the noticing self”
the part of you that notices (as opposed to the part of you that thinks)
for clients: noticing self, observing self, the part of you that notices
Values
“know what matters”
how we want to behave on an ongoing basis
they give us direction and guide life’s journey
Committed Action
“do what it takes” / “put your values into action”
taking effective action that’s guided by values
physical action (what we do with our body)
psychological action (what we do with our inner world)
Psychological Flexibility - what does it mean?
fully conscious and open to experiences
What are the benefits of psychological flexibility?
- experience a sense of vitality
- develop a sense of meaning and purpose
- improves quality of life
