Chapter 1 of Hazmat awareness
What is deemed as a hazardous materials?
Any substance that, once released from it’s container, has the ability to harm people, property or the environment.
How do you define hazardous material?
Any substance or material that poses an unreasonable risk to health, safety, property or the environment if not properly controlled
What is WMD? Explain the impact.
WMD is “Weapons of Mass Destruction” it is any weapon or device that is intended or has the capability to cause death or serious bodily injury to a significant number of people.
What does CBRNE stand for?
Chemical
Biological
Radiological
Nuclear
Explosives
What are the routes of exposure to HAZMAT material?
Inhalation
Ingestion
Absorption
Injection
What is the difference between Acute and Chronic effects
Acute: Short term that may appear within hours or days (puking)
Chronic: Long-term that may take years to appear such as cancer.

Awareness

Explain the Awareness Training Level
At the incident when it occurs (ex: utility workers) who witness the accident.
What does Awareness Training Level do?
They perform limited actions such as calling for help, evacuation of the area, and securing the scene.
Explain the First Responder Operation
Training Level and what they do
Include firefighters, law enforcement, industrial personnel they perform defensive actions but do not come into direct contact with hazardous material
Mission-Specific Training Level
First responders with operations mission specific level training may use specialized equipment and perform tasks where they come into contact with HAZMAT material
