What is the Executive branch’s duty?
Put laws into action.
What is the Legislative branch’s duty?
Comes up with/makes laws.
What is the Judicial branch’s duty?
To interpret and apply laws by making legal judgements.
To become Prime Minister, you have to:
- Must be elected as a leader of a political party
- Elected as a MP
- Must lead the party that has the most seats
What does the Cabinet do?
- Proposes most ideas which become laws
- Includes different people with different responsibilities for a different portfolio (finance, health & environment)
2 key responsibilities of the members of parliament are:
- To form legislation
- Represent their constituents
How are MPS elected?
They’re elected by winning the most votes in their riding (area). The number of ridings is based off of population.
What is the Senate’s job?
The Senate’s job is to provide a ‘sober second thought’ to all proposed legislation. This means
that they are supposed to provide unbiased and fair judgements, considering the perspectives of all Canadians
How are senators elected?
- Senators are appointed by the Prime Minister based on their region, political party and how they represent the different Canadian peoples.
What are the law-making steps?
- First reading
- Second reading
- Committee stage
- Report stage
- Third reading
- Royal assent

The bill is described, printed and distributed without any debate or vote.
Second reading
Debate and vote on the bill.
