deaf
refers to individuals whose hearing loss makes it very hard or impossible to understand spoken language through hearing alone, with or without the use of auditory devices.
Deaf
individuals who are members of the Deaf culture and community, use sign language, and shared beliefs, values, customs, and experiences that create a strong bond and group identity.
culture
a group of people that represent specific meanings, beliefs, and practices that guide the group in individual and social development.
Deaf culture
beliefs, morales, artistic expressions, behaviors, understanding, and language expressions that Deaf people use.
Late-deafended
individuals who become deaf after the age of 18 due to illness, sustained or acute exposure to noise, accident, genetic predisposition, medication allergy, or other unknown causes.
Deaf-world
Deaf people who share common traits such as sign language and Deaf culture.
National Association of the Deaf (NAD)
works towards improving the quality of life and creating communication access in schools, the workplace, the theater and arts, and other places.
Visibility
the state of being seen in the sense of empowerment, solidarity, pride, and political ability.
Deafhood
the actualization of oneself as a Deaf individual
Deaf Gain
visual and spatial benefits that come with being deaf.
Deaf Ethnicity
an argument that Deafness is an ethnicity due to having a collective name, shared language, feelings of community, behavior norms, distinct values, culture knowledge and customs, social/organizational structures, the arts, history, and kinship.
People of the Eye
people living in a highly visual world; this shifts the attention from “can’t hear” to deaf people as visual beings. This does not apply to people who are DeafBlind.
