Chapter 1 - Force and Momentum Flashcards
What is Newton’s first law of motion?
An object remains at rest or in uniform motion unless acted on by a force
What is Momentum?
Mass x Velocity
What is Newton’s second law of motion?
The resultant force is proportional to the change of momentum per second (F = ma)
What is Newton’s third law of motion?
When two objects interact, they exert equal and opposite forces on each other
What is the definition of Impulse?
The impulse of a force acting on an object is the change of momentum of the object
The area under the line of a force-time graph gives…?
The change in momentum or impulse of the force
What is the unit of momentum?
Newton second (N s)
or
Kilogram metre per second (kg m s^-1)
Equation for impulse is…?
F x t
F x change in t
Impact Force of a ball rebounding off of a wall = ?
F = change in momentum/contact time
(-mv) - (mu) / t
What dies the Principle of Conservation of Momentum state?
For a system of interacting objects, the total momentum remains constant (provided no external resultant force acts on the system)
What is an elastic collision?
A collision with no loss of Kinetic energy
What is a totally inelastic collision?
A collision where the colliding objects stick together (And don’t of the initial kinetic energy is converted to other forms of energy)
What is a partially inelastic collision?
A collision where the colliding objects move apart and have less kinetic energy than before (As the initial kinetic energy is transformed into other firms of energy)
