Chapter 1: Digestive System Flashcards
Learn about definitions and functions
What is the digestive system?
The system of organs responsible for getting food into and out of the body, and for making use of food to keep the body healthy
What is the function of the mouth?
Indigestion, intake of food, and storage if food as it is waiting to be digested
What is the function of the salivary glands?
Produces saliva
Helps break down carbohydrates
Lubricates the passage of food down from the oro-pharynx, to the esophagus, to the stomach
What is the function if the esophagus?
Is a transport tube that directs the progression of food and fluids from the mouth to the stomach
The walls of the esophagus propel food to the stomach by rhythmic waves of muscular contractions, called peristalsis
What is the function of the liver?
Bile production or excretion
What is the function of the gallbladder?
Stores bike until its needed for digestion
What is the function of the stomach?
Temporary storage for food, which passes through the esophagus
Mixing and breaking down food by contraction and relaxation of the muscle layers of the stomach
Digestion of food
What is the function of the pancreas?
Makes pancreatic juices called enzymes
These enzymes break down sugars, fats and starches
What is the function of the large intestine?
To absorb water and salts from the material that has not been digested as food
Gets rid of waste products left over
What is the function of the small intestine?
Carrie’s out most of the digestive process
Absorbs almost all of the nutrients you get from foods, into your bloodstream
Walls of the small intestine make digestive juices that work together with enzymes from the liver and pancreas to do this
What is the function of the appendix?
Protects good bacteria in the gut
What is the function of the rectum?
Stores stool until it pushes stool out of your anus during bowel movement
What is the function of the anus?
Let’s you know whether the contents of the bowel movement are liquid, gas or solid
Is surrounded by sphincter muscles that are important in allowing control of stool
What are enzymes?
Are proteins that act as biological catalysts in living organisms, regulating the rate at which chemical reactions proceed without itself being altered in the process
What are the final products of each class of food?
Carbohydrates get broken down into simple sugars such as glucose
Fats get broken down into fatty acids and glycerol
Proteins get broken down into amino acids
