Chapter 1 Definitions Flashcards
Define Mechatronics
Synergistic
combination of various disciplines
mechanical, electronics and control engineering
and computer science
in the design of products and processes
Key element: integration of these areas through design process
System
Combination of elements intended to act together to accomplish an objective
6 Overall System Behaviours
- Stability
- Safety
- Speed of Response
- Robustness
- Energy Efficiency
- Economics
Signal Conditioner
Converts sensing element output into suitable signal for control
Control System
collection of components designed and interconnected to achieve some objective(s)
Plant
Any physical or imaginary device whose output is to be controlled
Process
any natural or artificial or voluntary, progressively continuing operation that consists of a series of controller actions or movements systematically directed towards a particular result or end
Process Inputs
flows of energy and/or material that cause the process to respond
Manipulated Inputs
variables that can be directly varied by the controller so as to affect the value of the controlled variable
Disturbance Inputs
undesirable and unavoidable process inputs from outside the control system that affect the response of the process but are not controller y the control system.
Generally:
Random character
but can be deterministic for special cases
Noise
unwanted signals generated within the control system that corrupt the controller output signals
Output variables
variables we require to behave in some specified way
Reasons for need for Control
regulations: outputs must be maintained at a specified value in the presence of random or deterministic disturbance inputs
tracking: outputs must change to suit changing external variables
