Chapter 1 - DataWarehousing Basics Flashcards
Data - warehousing
collection objects that transform data in to useful information
8 stage process of BL Life cycle
- Interview and identify data
- plan the BI solution
- Create data warehouse
- create ETL process
- cube creation
- create reports
- test, tune the solution
- go live
4 main components of data warehouse
- Operational source system
- Data staging area
- Data presentation
- Data access tools
Operational source system
- capture the transaction of the business (OLTP)
* should be outside the data warehouse as we’ve no control over the content & format of the data
Data staging area
Storage area and set of procedures commonly known as ETL.
Off-limits to the business users
The in-between layer of operational staging area and data presentation area is ?
Data staging area
Data presentation area
The area is organized, stored and made available for query by users and analytical apps.
What’s the layer business users and data access tools operate on ?
Data presentation area
Data access tools
can be a simple ad hoc query an a sophisticated data mining or modeling application
Who use data warehouse ?
executives, senior managers, and business analysts in making complex business decisions
Why do we need data warehouse ?
- perform querying and reporting on servers/disks not used by transaction processing systems
- use data models and/or server technologies that speed up querying and reporting that are
not appropriate for transaction processing - easier to query and report data from multiple transaction processing systems and/or from external data sources and/or from data
- contains data from a longer span of time
- prevent persons who only need to query and report transaction processing system data
from having any access to transaction processing system databases
