Chapter 1 Content Flashcards
What is charles law?
as temperature increases, volume increases with a constant pressure and number of moles and gas
What is the kinetic molecular theory?
as the gas particles have more energy, they move faster. In order for the pressure to remain constant, the volume must increase to accomodate an increase in collisions on the container
What is chemistry?
the study of matter, its properties, and the mechanisms involed in its changes
What are the properties of matter and their characteristics?
- Solids (defined shape and defined volume)
- Liquids (defined volume)
- Gases (undefined volume and shape)
- Plasma (gaseous state with lots of electrical charges)
What is an atom?
the smallest particle of an element that has the properties of that element and can enter into a chemical combination
What is a molecule?
consists of 2 or more atoms connected by strong forces known as chemical bonds
What is matter composed of?
matter is composed of atoms, elements, and compounds
What are some physical properties?
size, color, shape, texture, melting and boiling point, dissolve
What are some chemical properties?
flammability (burn), acidity, oxidizing, and rust
A number is a sig fig when it is…
a) its not a zero
b)1 or more zeros between nonzero digits
c) 1 or more zeros at the end of a decimal number
d) in the coefficient of a number written in scientific notation
A number is not a sig fig if it is…
a) at the beginning of a decimal number
b) used as a placeholder in a number without a decimal point
What is density?
density is mass of a substance per designated volume
