Chapter 1 : Components Of Computer System Flashcards
Define peripherals
Attached to the computer
Eg. printer to output hard copy
Define Hardware
The physical parts of a computer system
Eg. Monitor
Define software
Consists of programs, routines and procedures which can be run on a computer system
Define input devices
Peripheral devices that accept data presented in the appropriate machine readable form
Eg. Keyboard, mice, digital cameras, microphones and touch screens
Define Storage devices
Memory devices used store programs, application, operating systems over a long period
Eg. Hard disk drives, DVDs and USB memory sticks
Define output devices
It translates signals from the computer into a human readable form for reprocessing by the computer as a later stage
Eg. printers, screen, players and speakers
Input devices for supermarket and library
Barcode reader - scan code with laser
keyboard - to manually input data
Automatic scales - to input weight of product
Card reader - to input card details
Keypad - to input PIN for card
Magnetic stripe - containing member no. magnetically
Output devices for supermarket and Library
Screen - show details of objects
Printer - to print receipt
Beeper - indicate valid reading of code
Sound - beep to signify that data has been accepted
Hardcopy output - provide evidence for updating other files
Examples of storage devices
Hard drive - to store files, fast access to data
CD ROM - to load software, cannot be written to
CD RW - to backup data
Memory stick - to move data between school and home
Solid state pen drive - make back ups, small/ light / portable
Purpose of input devices
To bring data into a computer system for processing.
Eg. Digital camera to input images of later processing before being included in a document
Purpose of output devices
To take the processed data and output it in a form suitable to make use of
Eg. Printed document
Purpose of storage devices
Save user data, programs and application for later use
Input devices for controlling heating
Temperature sensor - to give the computer infor about the temp or the room
Heater - used to heat up room
Why storage devices are necessary
- contents of memory lost when power switched off
- size of memory not sufficient to store all the data
- need to import files
Two methods of capturing the pictures for the system
- Scanner to input picture already In hard copy, pixels scanned
- electronic camera to take picture, lens focuses image onto matrix of memory card
