Usaully some sort of military achievement
Could replace an exiting cognomen or be added as a fourth name

Metal pouch given to boys
Boys would wear their pouch until they became a man
Bullas were thought to give protection from sickness and evil spirits
Lunula
The girl’s version of a bulla
Thought to give protection to its wearer
Lunula translates to little moon
Refers to goddess Diana, who romans believed protected little girls
Girls stopped wearing when married
