Chapter 1: Biology and the tree of life Flashcards
Biology
an explanation for the hows and whys of the diversity of life in all dimensions
3 dimensions
Time dimension
-Proximate: immediate cause of an effect
-Ultimate: Higher level reason for an effect
Biological
-molecules and proteins, through genes, to organisms, & communities
Spatial
-highly local to global
Conditions for something being alive?
- Energy: acquire & use
- Cells: membrane bound units that regulate structure and function
- information: ability to pass on info the the next generation
- Replication: sexual or Asexual
- Evolution: organisms are products of evolution and populations continuously evolve
Types of Diversity
- Genetic
- Taxonomic: # of types, & distribution of species within a taxa
- Ecosystem
Ecology
hows and whys organisms interact with each other and their physical enviroment
Evolution
a change in allele frequency in a population over time
Cell theory
all organisms are made up of cells and all cells come form preexisting cells
cells
highly organized compartment that is bounded by a thin flexible structure called a plasma membrane
Theory of evolution by natural selection
- species are related by a common ancestry
- characteristics can be modified from generation to generation
The two conditions for natural selection
- individuals within a population vary in characteristics that are heritable
- certain versions of these heritable traits help individuals survive better
Fitness
the ability of an individual to produce viable offspring
Adaptation
a trait that increases the fitness of an individual in a particular environment
