Chapter 1 - Atoms, Bonding And Moles Flashcards
What is the plum pudding model
The original model of the atom where electrons are in a cloud of positive gas
How was the nucleus discovered
By firing a positively charged alpha particle through gold. When some were deflected it became clear there was a nucleus
What are shells
The orbit of electrons around a nucleus
What is the charge and mass of protons, neutrons and electrons
Protons = +1c +1m Neutrons = 0c +1m Electrons = -1c 0m
What is an isotope
Atoms of the same element with different amount of neutrons
What does the particle model state
- no forces between particles
- particles are spherical
- spheres are solid
What is a covenant bond
When electrons are shared between non metal atoms
What are the three covenant structures
- giant covelant
- small molecules
- large molecules
Name an example of a covenant structure
Graphite
What is an ion
When an atom has gained/lost an electron
What is ionic bonding
When a metal and non metal bonds and, instead of sharing electrons, they give and take them
Metal facts
- Metals are demoralised
- Pure metals are malleable (soft)
- Metals are good conductors
- They have high melting and boiling points
