Chapter 1- Atomic Structure Flashcards
ATOM
a particle that cannot be broken down into smaller particles
MOLECULE
Made up of atoms
(the same or different)
that are chemically
joined/bonded.
ELEMENT
Made up of only one kind of atom. Can be made up of just atoms or of molecules
COMPOUND
Made up of different atoms that are chemically joined/bonded
MIXTURE
Made up of elements, compounds, or both that are mixed and can be separated as
the different elements and compounds are not joined/bonded to each other.
ISOTOPES
Isotopes are atoms of the same element
which have the same number of protons but a different number of neutrons.
CHEMICAL FORMULA
made up of element symbols and numbers
can tell you whether something is an element or compound and
how many atoms it is made of.
NUCLEUS
The nucleus has most of the mass of
an atom, though it is only a very small part of it. It is located in the centre of the atom and contains the protons and neutrons.
PROTONS
Protons are found in the nucleus of an atom. They have a positive charge (+1) and have the same mass as a neutron.
NEITRONS
The nucleus holds the protons and neutrons. The neutron has no charge and is therefore neutral. It has a mass of 1.
ELECTRONS
In shells around the nucleus is where the electrons are found. They have a negative charge (-1) and a mass of 1/1836.
