Chapter 1 and 2 Flashcards
What is Dynamic Equilibrium?
A state of balance. A system in which changes are occurring but the components have the ability to adjust without disturbing the system.
What are the three levels of the biosphere?
Lithosphere (Rock)
Hydrosphere (Water)
Atmosphere (Air)
What is the Biosphere?
A narrow zone around the earth in which life is found.
What is Biotic?
Living components of the Biosphere
What is Abiotic?
Non-living components of the Biosphere
Define Populations
A group of the same species
What is an ecosystem?
It is where biotic and abiotic components interact
What is a community?
When more than one population of species are in an area.
Arrange the ecosystem, population, and community from smallest to
largest
Smallest - Population
Middle - Community
Largest - Ecosystem
What does the term Detrius mean?
Waste left by a living organism. (Including dead remains)
How can humans get rid of the population of a species?
Loss of habitat, pollution, UV Radiation, and getting rid of another species interrupting the food chain.
What is a food web?
A food web is a food chain but with multiple species and lines.
What are trophic levels?
Levels of species on a food chain going from producers, to primary consumers, and then to secondary consumers.
What is an autotroph?
It is a producer.
What is a heterotroph?
A species that can’t make their own food so they consumer other organisms for their energy.
Chemical Equation of Photosynthesis
6CO2 + 6H20 = C6 + H12O6 + 6O2
Equation of Cellular Respiration
C6H12O6 + 6O2 = 6CO2 + 6H2O + Energy
What are the first two laws of thermodynamics?
- Energy can be transformed from one to another, it also cannot be created or destroyed.
- During any energy transformation energy can be lost, nothing is 100% efficient.
What is an Ecological Pyramid?
A graph that is used to present energy flow in food chains or webs or it can be used to show the populations of organisms in a food chain.
Why are frogs sensitive?
Their skin is semi-permeable so many factors of the environment can harm them such as pollution or even heat.
What do Invasive species do?
They are a foreign species that interferes with an ecosystems dynamic equilibrium by killing off native species or having no predators so their population booms.
What are indicator species?
Species that are particularly sensitive to the ecosystem so they can be used to indicate something wrong with the health or well being of the environment.
