Chapter 1 and 2 Flashcards
Categorical/ Qualitative
uses descriptive terms to measure or classify something of interest Nominal or Ordinal -gender -year level -student ID #
Numerical/ Quantitative
uses numerical values to describe something of interest Interval or Ratio -weight -height -price -# of people
Nominal
can only give data names and categorize them, cannot rank data
- state
- zipcode
- major
- gender
Ordinal
can rank- order the values from lowest to highest, cannot make measurements between the two
- level of education
- year level
- satisfaction rating
- letter grade
Interval
strictly numeric data with no true zero point and twice as much rule does not apply
- temperature
- year of birth
- gpa
Ratio
has a true zero point
- age
- height/weight
- price
- salary
Descriptive Statistics
summarize and display data
Inferential
allows us to make claims or conclusions about the data based on the sample
population
all possible subjects of interest
sample
subset of the population
parameter
everything that is measured from the population
statistic
everything that is measured from the sample
Displaying Categorical data
pie chart
bar graph
Displaying Numerical data
frequency distribution table
Boxplot
