Chapter 1 Flashcards
Mass
amount of matter in object (measured in grams or kilograms)
Force
any influence that causes change in object: change in speed, direction, shape.
Weight
force of gravity on object; related to object’s mass
Volume
quantity of three-dimensional space occupied by a liquid, solid, or gas
Density
mass of a substance per unit volume
Velocity
mass of a substance per unit volume
Momentum
mass times velocity of an object during motion
Acceleration
Acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the force applied and inversely proportional to object’s mass
Intertia
object’s resistance to changes in state of its motion or rest
Elasticity
is property of an object to return to its original shape after it has been deformed by an external force. External force is called stress
Stiffness
resistance of elastic body to deformation by external force
Work
force exerted over a distance
Energy
ability to do work (there is electrical energy and sound energy, etc)
Power
rate of work done or energy used in a period of time. Measured in watts
Intensity
power per unit of area. Measured in watts per square meter in MKS and watts per square centimeter in CGS system
