Chapter 1 Flashcards

Q

Psalm 89:5-16

Who is like You, O Lord!!

A

The heavens will praise Your wonders, O LORD; Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones.
For who in the skies is comparable to the LORD? Who among the sons of the mighty is like the LORD, A God greatly feared in the council of the holy ones, and awesome above all those who are around Him?
O LORD God of hosts, who is like You, O mighty LORD? Your faithfulness also surrounds You.
You rule the swelling of the sea; when its waves rise, You still them.
You Yourself crushed Rahab like one who is slain; You scattered Your enemies with Your mighty arm.
The heavens are Yours, the earth also is Yours; the world and all it contains, You have founded them.
The north and the south, You have created them; Tabor and Hermon shout for joy at Your name.
You have a strong arm; Your hand is mighty, Your right hand is exalted.
Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; lovingkindness and truth go before You.
How blessed are the people who know the joyful sound! O LORD, they walk in the light of Your countenance.
In Your name they rejoice all the day, and by Your righteousness they are exalted.

Q

God-Is Real and Present

A

Remember,

“As you move through life facing each day’s responsibilities, challenges, trials, temptations and varied circumstances, it is of utmost benefit to your genuine success in all of these moments of life to remember both Who your God is and that the ever-present God is always with you.”
“He is the real God. Your God is the Mighty God, the One True God. No one is like your God, for He alone is the real God!! And this real God is present He is everywhere present: He is present with you at this very moment. This Almighty God is with you every single moment of your day no matter where you are. This is how great a God He is! When you stop and consider that this real God, this Almighty God, is everywhere and ever present with you, why for even one moment would you want to fly solo? Why would you ever want to do anything by yourself?”

Psalm 145:14-18

He is near-He sustains, He provides, He is righteous, He is kind to ALL who call upon Him in truth

A

The LORD sustains all who fall and raises up all who are bowed down.
The eyes of all look to You,
and You give them their food in due time.
You open Your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing.
The LORD is righteous in all His ways and kind in all His deeds.
The LORD is near to all who call upon Him, to all who call upon Him in truth.

Isaiah 31:1

Don’t put trust or reliance on anyone (people) or the strength in anything except God. Whose stronger? The horse or the One who made the horse

A

Isaiah 31:1 Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help and rely on horses, and trust in chariots because they are many and in horsemen because they are very strong, but they do not look to the Holy One of Israel, nor seek the LORD!

Q

Psalm 46:1

My refuge- a safe haven

A

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

“God is with you. Why would you ever want to do anything solo? Why would you ever want to do anything with an attitude such as: “Thanks, God, but it’s okay. I’ve got this. I don’t really need your help. You can follow me, God. I’ve got this, so I’ll lead.” In what reality would that ever make sense, yet is this not what you have done at times?”

Q

Am I Actively Aware?

A

You need to build and develop an awareness that this God is real and present in your life and in your discipleship. You must learn to take your cues from Him (His leading, His directing and His guiding) so that you are not flying solo only to intermittently remember that you need Him. “I guess I can ask God about this now.” You could also be right in the middle of something and think “Oh yeah – God …” when you should first be praying, “God, should I …? Is there anything I should know?” You need His direction. You want to know which way to go rather than realizing that you are in a jam and needing to cry out to Him for help.

Q

My relationship

A

He is a very present help in trouble, and He is a very present help even before there is trouble. You cannot pretend at your relationship with God and expect genuine benefit and fruit. You must truly have a real and present relationship with this real and present God if you truly desire the success, blessing and fruit that God can give you in this life.

I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
You shall have no other gods before Me.”

Matthew 22:36-40

Jesus confirms this … my relationship with God is first and primary and the most important of all my relationships

A

Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?”
And He said to him, “ ‘Y OU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.’
This is the great and foremost commandment.
The second is like it, ‘Y OU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’
On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets.”

Q

He is real, He is the Living God

Not religion, not a philosophy, not a myth — no trust just empty religion

A

Your relationship is with a real being, and He has something to say. God created life, knows how it is to be lived and wants to live it with you.
You can read your Bible and do all of the things expected of you but if you do not have a relationship with God – if those things do not build toward that goal – you only have empty religion. You are holding to a form of godliness, although you have denied its power (II Timothy 3:5).

II Timothy 3:1-5

Empty religion doesn’t change or saves

A

“You must understand this: In the last days there will be violent periods of time. People will be selfish and love money. They will brag, be arrogant, and use abusive language. They will curse their parents, show no gratitude, have no respect for what is holy, and lack normal affection for their families. They will refuse to make peace with anyone. They will be slanderous, lack self-control, be brutal, and have no love for what is good. They will be traitors. They will be reckless and conceited. They will love pleasure rather than God. They will appear to have a godly life, but they will not let its power change them. Stay away from such people.”

II Chronicles 16:9a

A

For the eyes of the LORD move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His.
‭‭2 Chronicles‬ ‭16:9‬a

God will not play second fiddle to anyone or anything in your life. Practically speaking, this has to do first and foremost with your attitude (your mindset) and then it translates into wholehearted discipleship (discipline). You come to know intimately and obey this One True God, and THEN He strongly supports you because your heart is completely His. You have given your heart to Him; He is your first love.

Psalm 123:2

A

Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the LORD our God, until He is gracious to us.

“Knowing that everything comes from His hand, you do this in your life until God gives you the direction and provisions you need. God does not just tell you what to do and expect you to figure out the details and then supply for yourself. No, He provides for you.

Q

Isaiah 59:1-8

He is a holy God - sin separates us - must deal with them or cannot have relationship with Him.
He is not emotional, in sense of feelings…

A

Behold, the LORD’s hand is not so short that it cannot save; Nor is His ear so dull That it cannot hear.
But your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God,
And your sins have hidden His face from you so that He does not hear.
For your hands are defiled with blood And your fingers with iniquity;
Your lips have spoken falsehood,
Your tongue mutters wickedness.
No one sues righteously and no one pleads honestly. They trust in confusion and speak lies; They conceive mischief and bring forth iniquity…
…Their works are works of iniquity, And an act of violence is in their hands.
Their feet run to evil, And they hasten to shed innocent blood;
Their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity, Devastation and destruction are in their highways.
They do not know the way of peace, And there is no justice in their tracks; They have made their paths crooked, Whoever treads on them does not know peace.

17
Q

Father child relationship - training

A

Your relationship with God is not to revolve around your feelings. Think about the father-to-child analogy that God uses in Scripture – it is a father-to child relationship in training, growth and development. God does not want to snuggle with you; He wants to train you. God also uses a master-to-servant analogy to illustrate the work to be accomplished. God has things for you to do

He wants you to get busy and fully partake in the family business. Thus you should be busy with Him in His endeavors. Really understand and take this to heart, for it is a fundamental and critical view of living your life as a disciple

18
Q

Proper Perspective and Expectation

It’s about the Family Business
Being busy in the calling to which I was called and walk worthy of it
The furtherance and advancement of the gospel in my own lives and life of others
That makes me am ESSENTIAL WORKER

A

Ask yourself this question: Is it your expectation (your manner of life reflected by your prayer life and relationship with Him) that God should join you and help you in your endeavors? Should you not rather join Him and assist Him in His?

19
Q

Eliminate all ungodly childish thinking

A

In the past, many of the first generation of this church were part of a pseudo church that viewed God as their slave. When all the trappings are removed, it was all about demanding of God and telling Him what He ought to be doing for you. Ask yourself if there may still be vestiges of this in your thinking. Have you really given your life to Him? Are you truly viewing this relationship properly? God is not going to back your play when your play has nothing to do with His will. It does not work this way. Ask yourself: For whom are you living? Do you expect God to be serving you? Do not be quick to conclude “Of course not!” This can be subtle. Slow down; look at what your life looks like on a daily basis. If God is not real in your day-to-day living, how do you know that you are not merely setting out to accomplish your will and then asking God to call it “the straight and narrow way

20
Q

I Timothy 2:4

God desire for me

A

[God] who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.

The family business is preaching the gospel of the Kingdom of God and helping others to live it alongside yourself. God wants as many people as are called to enter the kingdom and live with Him forever. This is what your life is about, and everything about your life has to fit within this. If your Father’s business does not shape your thinking and you are not making all of your decisions in light of it and with His constant counsel, you are not living correctly. God desires to build a holy family that reflects His holiness, His righteousness, His character and His concerns. Are you on board with this as you ought to be? Are you all in? Is your heart completely His?

21
Q

II Corinthians 1:3,4

God of all comfort

A

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

Part of the Father’s business is comforting those who are afflicted and in need of comfort. God supplies those who are busy and involved in His business with what they need so that they can then give to others. This is how it works in everything when you join the Father’s business wholeheartedly. Just as it was with Peter when he left his nets to follow the Lord Jesus Christ, this is a heart issue. When you have left your nets like Peter did (which means not literally quitting your job but surrendering all) you know that you are wholeheartedly involved in the Father’s business.

22
Q

Lord, what would you have me do?

A

Looking to the master- What would you have me do?” and then carry out what God instructs. “Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven” – when you pray this, do you mean it? What then does this look like? There is no selfish thinking such as “Well, I will want ‘Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven’ when the kingdom comes, but in the meantime, I’d like to get what’s mine, and I have a few good ideas that I’d like to pursue. Genuinely seeking God’s will begins now with the kingdom in your very own heart. When you view every category of your life in this way, knowing that this real God is present with you and has something to say to you, He will start making Himself known in every area of your life. When you join Him in carrying out His will on earth, He will provide all that you need in order to accomplish it, and He will care for you (His servant and child) in the process.

23
Q

II Corinthians 1:5-12

A

For just as the sufferings of Christ are ours in abundance, so also our comfort is abundant through Christ.
But if we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; or if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which is effective in the patient enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer; and our hope for you is firmly grounded, knowing that as you are sharers of our sufferings, so also you are sharers of our comfort. For we do not want you to be unaware, brethren, of our affliction which came to us in Asia, that we were burdened excessively, beyond our strength, so that we despaired even of life; indeed, we had the sentence of death within ourselves so that we would not trust in ourselves, but in God who raises the dead; who delivered us from so great a peril of death, and will deliver us, He on whom we have set our hope. And He will yet deliver us, you also joining in helping us through your prayers, so that thanks may be given by many persons on our behalf for the favor bestowed on us through the prayers of many.

For our proud confidence is this: the testimony of our conscience, that in holiness and godly sincerity, not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God, we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially toward you.

24
Q

The Domino Effect

A

There was affliction because these people were giving their lives in service to the brethren. In the process of giving their lives, they were comforting others who were afflicted, thus creating a domino effect, yet all were being cared for. The God of all comfort always has enough comfort to go around. He faithfully supplies. This is how all of God’s care and provisions become available to you. When you live to love and serve Him, His people and His interests, God supplies what you need.

25
Q

Deuteronomy 13:4

A

You shall follow the LORD your God and fear Him; and you shall keep His commandments, listen to His voice, serve Him, and cling to Him.

Compare your life to this. If you only pray for a few minutes in the morning, read the Scriptures for a short while and then do not think about God again (at all or for long stretches of time), He is merely an afterthought. You must cling to Him – and this is mental! Do not think that you are “going to hug God” because you cannot hug Him. You must keep both your and God’s roles straight: He leads and you follow. In nothing are you the boss; in nothing are you calling the shots.

26
Q

Cooperate - Take Time -Develop Relationship - get marching orders- God’s speed

A

If you spend a lot of your time wondering what the will of God is, not really knowing yet taking action anyway, you are living your life incorrectly. This is not how life works. You should know what you are to do in life. God is first: So take the time – make the time and be absolutely sure – that He is first. Then make sure that He stays first so that you know what you are to be doing. In those situations or moments when you do not know what to do, do you run ahead or do you trust and rely on Him as His slave? You can be sure that He will not waste your time. If you have not gotten your “marching orders” yet, perhaps there is a reason, and so you must wait on the Lord. But you are not to wait for years doing nothing because you do not know. It does not work this way. God is the real and present God, but if you do not develop your relationship, if your heart is not wholly His and you do not want to work with Him, then there is no relationship. This is the truth and the way it is to work. God is real. This is not a mere “principle of life.” This is actually how life works.

27
Q

Maturity - Surrender ALL

A

There is an efficiency to all of this as you live His way and continue to grow at the proper pace. It takes time to develop relationships, to mature and to learn to walk with God. You cannot speed it up beyond the pace that God sets. There are lessons for you to learn. You would never give a 5 year old the keys to your car and a grocery list because they are not ready for it. They must grow into this level of responsibility. Certain things have to fall into place first. Likewise, there is maturity in walking with God. You cannot shortcut your road to maturity but you certainly can hinder it. You can slow it down with pride, stubbornness and obstinacy, lack of submission and seeking your will and not His. You must keep it simple: He is the leader; you are the follower. You need to pay attention and do what you are told in the way He says to do it. You need to use what He provides you in order to be the best and to serve Him in the way you ought. When you do this, life is simple and pretty sweet. Keep in mind no one does it perfectly but I am to live this way.

Although no person does this perfectly, it is available to live in this manner. The meek man Moses (Numbers 12:3), is a good example. Look at how God worked with him. God is not going to ask you to lead people out of Egypt and into the promised land, but there are things He is calling you to do. You never have to think that God is playing hide-and-go-seek with you regarding His will. He does not do that. God makes His will known if you are paying attention to the ways in which He endeavors to get your attention. Are you listening? Will you pay attention, follow through and do things His way? Do you attend to the truth set before you or do you forget it and let it slip away so that there is no change? Why allow that when God can teach you? If you are not paying attention when you pray, read and spend time with people, you are limiting the everywhere-present God.

28
Q

Deuteronomy 6:4-12

Listen, obey, follow through - fear Him and Love Him

A

Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one!
You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart.
You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.
You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead.
You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
Then it shall come about when the LORD your God brings you into the land which He swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you, great and splendid cities which you did not build, and houses full of all good things which you did not fill, and hewn cisterns which you did not dig, vineyards and olive trees which you did not plant, and you eat and are satisfied, then watch yourself, that you do not forget the LORD who brought you from the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery

29
Q

Don’t Forget!

A

You know what happened – they forgot Him. Do not be quick to think “How could they do that?” for you have done it at times. You must watch and take care that you do not forget any of the benefits God provides you. You are not to forget God amidst the affairs of your life. You must discipline your mind to remember Him and then discipline your senses to discern both good and evil to the end that you are all in. You cannot afford to forget Him. You must remember that the real God is present with you every moment of every day, everywhere you are, and in everything that you are doing

30
Q

John 8:26,27

Jesus - materful example

A

I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you, but He who sent Me is true; and the things which I heard from Him, these I speak to the world.

Certainly Jesus Christ is the masterful example of one to whom God was real and present in his moment-by-moment life. They did not realize that He had been speaking to them about the Father.

Jesus did not invent his message; he spoke what God wanted spoken.

31
Q

John 8:28

**Focus on him

A

So Jesus said, “When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He, and I do nothing on My own initiative, but I speak these things as the Father taught Me.”

This “lifting up the Son of Man” refers to Jesus’ crucifixion when he was lifted up on a cross. This is analogous to the time Moses lifted up a serpent on the pole to quell the deadly plague experienced by the children of Israel. Jesus Christ was (and still is) the greatest follower of God ever to have lived.

32
Q

John 8:29-31

A

John 8:29-31 “And He who sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him.”
As He spoke these things, many came to believe in Him.
So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine.”

Jesus always did the Father’s bidding as the Father taught him. He always did God’s will, but beyond that, he did God’s will the way God wanted it done. These are really two different things. Noah is another good example of this. He used the materials he was told to use; he used gopher wood, not paper mache. He did not have a “better way” such as letting the people of the world help him out for the sake of efficiency! He did what God wanted him to do, the way God wanted it done. These are two separate things, and both are important.
