What does an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) do?
AEMTs do everything that an EMT does PLUS use advanced airway equipment like LMA, watch blood glucose levels, IVs and in-bone infusions, and give patients certain medications. Job level considered higher than EMR but lower than Paramedic.
What does an Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) do?
EMR is the most basic job level and often the person on scene first.
What is the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)?
Federal law passed in 1990 giving people with a documented disability employment protection, such as getting hired or fired. Ex. Someone who is blind or paralyzed.
What does an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) do?
EMT is a person who provides BASIC care, such as blood pressure, and transports. Only limited meds unlike AEMT who can give more advanced meds.
What does EMS system stand for?
Emergency Medical Services system
What is evidence-based medicine?
Use of scientific evidence to guide medical procedures, meds, and equipment. In the past, research more in hospital settings, so EMTs should support research.
What is medical direction?
The EMS protocols followed. Ex. On-line is directions from a doctor and off-line are written guidelines used at scene.
What is a medical director?
Doctor who is legally responsible for the clinical and patient care aspects of an EMS system.
What is medical oversight?
Term used to describe a medical director’s responsibilities. Basically, everything that happens in the EMS system to patients.
What is off-line medical direction?
The written guidelines used in EMS.
What is on-line medical direction?
Direct orders by a doctor given to EMT, AEMT, or EMS provider at scene. Radio or telephone—verbal, not written.
What is the paramedic’s role in EMS?
Paramedic is a person who provides HIGHEST level of prehospital care; does what both EMTs & AEMTs do, including advanced assessments.
What is prehospital care?
Care given before a patient is transported to the hospital, aka out-of-hospital
What are protocols?
EMS procedures and policies, aka orders/standing orders
What is quality improvement (QI)?
QI or CQI are reviews and audits to make sure patients receive the best care; continuous quality improvement
