- ‘trampled calmly’, the oxymoron illustrates Hyde’s irregularity
- ‘left her screaming’ can be likened to a damsel in distress which emphasises the theme of Gothic.
Hyde’s inhumane trampling of the child. The quote is describing Hyde’s physical dominance and supernatural power.

- ‘Juggernaut’ was a huge lorry, or a powerful and overwhelming force. This describes his power and that he is not human.
What is the name of Chapter 1?
The story of the door.
Told in Enfield’s story about how Mr Hyde brings out the worst in humans, his evil is so great that he makes others evil.
“Sawbones turned sick and white with the desire to kill him”
- ‘Sawbones’ is a Victorian word for doctor, the oxymoron of the doctor wanting to kill while his job is about saving lives.
A drop in quotation about Hyde that has religious connotations linking Hyde to an antichrist figure.
“really like Satan”
Enfield describing how words cannot comprehend the sheer horror and the disgusting enormity of Hyde’s trampling.
“It sounds nothing to hear, but it was hellish to see”
Utterson showing his typical Victorian values by keeping discretionary his thoughts and emotions. He suggests the duality of man early in the novel through a biblical reference.
“I incline to Cain’s heresy”
‘Cain’s heresy’ is a story from the Genesis, (in the Bible). In which Cain, older son of Adam and Eve murders Abel (his younger brother) out of jealousy.
This suggests human duality with inherent evil in parts of human nature
