Chapter 1 Flashcards
Volts and Amps
Define Voltage
Voltage is electric pressure or electromotive force. The unit used to measure the amount of pressure is the volt.
What are typical distribution system voltages?
7,200/12,470
7.600/13,200
12,000/20,800
19,900/34,500
What are typical transmission system voltages?
69,000 115,000 138,000 230,000 345,000 500,000 765,000
What is a coulomb?
A coulomb is a quantity measurement of electrons.
What is an amp?
An amp is defined as on coulomb per second.
An amp is a measurement of the amount of electricity flowing through a circuit.
Explain the effects that voltage and amperage have on the electrical system
Voltage effects the amount of insulation needed for a given power line, the separation between line conductors, safe working practices and the types of tools needed to work on the lines.
Amperage rating of a wire may not be exceeded. If exceeded the added friction created by the colliding electrons will melt the wire
