Chapter 1 Flashcards
Cyanobacteria
- oxygen producing photosynthesis
- changes the course of life on earth by providing O2
- become endosymbions (mitochondria and chloroplast)
Chemoautotroph
Organisms that use chemical energy to breakdown carbon to make food for themselves
Protozoa
Causes malaria
Phytoplankton
Causes red tide
Fungi
Food production cheese and fermentation. Could be pathogenic
Helminthes
Parasitic worms
Microorganism
Are small living things that are too small to be seen with the human eye
- bacteria, fungi(yeast and mold), Protozoa, and microscopic algae.
- not only germs and what not some MOs help us balance out life
Bacteria
Are single celled or unicellular organisms
Prokaryotes
- include both bacteria and archaea
- different shapes: BACILLUS (rodlike) SPIRAL (cork screw or curved) COCCUS (spherical)
- can manufacture their own food through photosynthesis from either living or dead organisms…some even from inorganic substances
Archaea
Consist of prokaryotic cells but have cell walls that lack peptidoglycan
Divided into main 3 groups: methanongens, halophiles, thermophiles
Methanongens
Produce methane as a waste product
Halophiles
Live in extreme salty environments
Thermophiles
Live in hot sulfur water
-doesn’t cause disease to humans
