Chapter 1 Flashcards
Investigation
The study that a scientist does
Infer
To draw conclusions about something by using gathered data or previous knowledge
Inquiry
When someone asks a question or studies something closely
Hypothesis
A possible answer to a question that can be tested
Formulate
To come up with a plan
Experiment
Is a test done to find out if a hypothesis is true or false
Scientific Method
As a way of answering a question by using an organized plan
Variable
Is the one thing in a science inquiry that is different. All the other parts of the inquiry stay the same.
What is a thermometer?
Measures the temperature of liquids and air.
What is the unit of measurement for a thermometer?
Celsius and Fahrenheit
What temperature does water boil and freeze at?
Boils - 212 degrees Fahrenheit (100 degrees Celsius)
Freezes - 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius)
What is a dropper used for?
To move small amounts of liquid
Or
To measure volume by counting drops
When is a tape measure used?
To measure the length of curved or irregular surfaces
When is a spring scale used?
To measure force, such as weight or friction
Units called Newtons
What is a ruler used for?
To measure the length and width of objects in centimeters and millimeters.
What is a measuring cup used for?
To measure the volume of liquids
Liters and milliliters
What are forceps used for?
To help you pick up small objects
What are hand lens used for?
To make objects appear larger and see more detail
What is a microscope used for?
A tool for looking at something very small
It magnifies objects a thousand times
What are the parts of a microscope?
Eyepiece - contains one lens and is mounted at the end of the tube
Stage - holds the slide or object you are looking at
Base - supports the microscope. Usually holds a mirror that shines light through the object
Nosepiece - holds one or more lenses that can magnify an object up to 400 times
Adjustment knobs - help you focus the lense
What is a balance used for?
To measure the amount of matter in an object
Grams or kilograms
