Chapter 1 Flashcards
What is systems analysis and design?
A step by step process for developing high-quality information systems
Information System
combines technology, people, and data to provide support for business functions

vital to company’s operations
Data
Basic facts that are the system’s raw material. Transformed into information. Stored in tables.
Information
Data that has been transformed into output that is valuable to users
5 Components of an Information System
Hardware, software, data, processes, and people
Hardware
Everything in the physical layer of the information system
Server Farm
A large concentration of servers working together
Moore’s Law
The number of transistors on an integrated circuit chip will double about every 24 months
Software
The programs that control the hardware and produce the desired information or results. Consists of systems and applications.
System software
Manages the hardware components. Can include a single computer or a global network. Also controls flow of data, provides data security, and manages network operations.
Application Software
programs that support day-to-day business functions and provide users with the information they need. Includes horizontal and vertical systems.
Enterprise applications
company-wide applications

A system that can be adapted for use in many different types of companies
Vertical System
Designed to meet the unique requirements of a specific business or industry
Legacy Systems
Older systems
Processes
