Superior
Moving towards the head
Ex . The nose is superior to the lips
Inferior
Moving towards the feet area
Ex - the chin is inferior to the lips
Lateral
Moving away from the middle of the body
Ex
the thumbs are lateral to the index finger
Medial
Moving toward the midline of the body
Ex - the big toe is the most medial toe of the foot
Anterior
The “front” of the body
The sternum is on the anterior side of the body
Posterior
The back of the body
Ex - the heel bone is on the posterior side of the foot
Proximal
Part of organ located nearest to point of origin
Ex - the elbow is proximal to the wrist
Distal
Part of organ located farthest from the point of origin
Ex - the ankle is distal to the knee cap
Frontal
Separating the anterior part of the tissue or organ from the posterior part
Sagittal
Separating the right part of the tissue or organ from the left part
Transverse
Separating the superior part of the tissue or organ from the inferior part
Oblique
Making a dissectional cut at an angle across the tissue or organ
Superficial
On the surface or near the surface of the body
Deep
Deeper into the body . Farthest away from the superficial
Intermediate
Tissue that is located somewhere between two other pieces of tissue .
Ex - superficial tissue and deep tissue
