Chapter 1 Flashcards
Parts of an ecosystem
- Abiotic and abiotic
- Can be large or small area
- Biomes contain many different ecosystems
- Habitat where an organism lives
What’s Abiotic Interactions?
Materials living things depend on
What are some abiotic factors?
Be specific
- oxygen
- water
- nutrients
- light (photosynthesis)
- Soil (nutrients, water, habitat)
What’s an habitat?
A place where an organism lives
What is community?
All organisms that interact within ecosystem .
What is Species?
All of the organisms within an ecosystem that have same structure.
What is population?
All members of a certain species within an ecosystem.
What’s commensalism?
One species benefits, one is not affected
What’s mutualism?
Both species benefits
What is parasitism?
One species benefits, one is harmed
What is niche?
Role an organism has within an ecosystem
What is competition?
Occurs when a resource is needed by two or more individuals… limited resource
What is predation?
One organism (predator) eats all or part of another organism (prey)
What do healthy ecosystems equal?
High biodiversity
What does loss of habitat equal?
Loss of biodiversity
What is Predator-prey interaction?
******
Predator prey relationships. A predator is a organism that eats the prey. A prey is the organism who is eaten by the predator. Eg. Lynx (predator) eats the hare (prey).
What is biotic?
Biotic things are living things like animals, plants, fungi, and bacteria are all examples of biotic components in an ecosystem.
What’s biosphere?
Its a thin layer of air, land, and water on or near earths surface in which all of earths living things exist.
What are the main abiotic factors?
Temperature and Precipitation
What’s abiotic?
Abiotic components are non living parts of an environment like sunlight, moisture, temperature.
Canada Biomes?
- Tundra
- Boreal forests
- Grasslands
- temperate Deciduous forest
- and Mountain forest
What’s Latitude?
Distance north and south from the equator
What’s Elevation?
- Atmosphere is thinner at higher elevations–> less heat retained
- windward sides of mountains are wet, leeward sides are very dry.
What’s Ocean current?
- Ocean current carry earth and moisture to coastal areas.
- where warm currents meet land, temperate Biomes are found.
What are Climatographs?
Climatograhs shows average temperature and precipitations.
What’s climate?
Average pattern of weather conditions of a large region over a period of 30 years or more.
What’s adaptation?
Characteristics that allows organisms that survive and reproduce.
What’s structural adaptation?
Give example
Physical feature that’s helps an organism survive. Wolf has large paws to help it run in snow.
What’s Physiological adaptation?
Give example
Physical or chemical event inside body of an organism that allows it to survive. Wolf maintains a constant body temperature .
What’s behavioural adaptation?
Give example.
Behaviour that helps an organism to survive. Wolves hunt in packs to capture large prey.
