Chapter 1 Flashcards
What is EBP? What does EBP help do?
Evidenced Based Practice. It is a process used by health-care professionals to make clinical decisions to answer clinical questions. EBP is based on research evidence or findings. It helps to make informed decisions.
What three components make up evidence based practice?
- Best Research Evidence
- Clinical Expertise
- Patient Values and Preferences
What is the Researcher Pathway?
The researcher pathway is a framework and path which denotes different levels of research comprehension and ability to collect and interpret data. It consists of 5 levels. Level 1 - 3 are ascending research users, Level 4 - 5 are producers of research. We are expected to reach level 2 by the end of our BSN program.
How is EBP theories reached?
Through evidence based information (EBI) which then leads to conclusions and implemented as EVP.
Here is a definition of EBP:
EBP is a problem-solving approach to the delivery of health care that integrates the best evidence from well-designed studies and patient care data, and combines it with patient preferences and values and nurse expertise.
What is a systematic review? Why is it important?
A systematic review is the process of asking clinical questions and doing a structured and organized search for theory-based information. Then reviewing the results from that research and reaching a conclusion about implications for practice.
What is research utilization?
The use of research in practice. Understanding the language and the process of research, coupled with clinical experience, allowing contribution to a research team.
Who does the history of nursing research begin with? What was her research about?
Florence Nightingale. She was studying environmental factors that affected the health of soldiers in the Crimean War.
What is the evidence-based bridge theory?
The theory states that there is a gap that exists between available research (evidence based information) and the need for active application of this research to ensure positive growth and/or change in an individuals professional environment.
What is research literacy?
Possessing the understanding of research terms and processes and the ability to discern the validity of the research study’s findings or evidenced based information.
What are evidence-based models?
Models which apply valid research findings to clinical practice.
What are three EBP models? What is the overall purpose of EBP models?
The Iowa Model, The Ottawa Model, and Joanna Briggs Institute model. EBP models help validate and apply EBI into healthcare practice.
What are the six essential elements of an EBP model?
Assess, Ask, Acquire, Appraise, Apply, Evaluate
When should you seek evidence? (What are the 3 conditions in health-care setting)
- Something occurs out of the ordinary.
- Outcomes of care differ in one or more patients without clear reason.
- Need to develop a policy, procedure, or standard for care.
What do effective clinical questions contain?
The question addresses the Who, Where, What, When. It includes a concern that can be measured or described and is relevant to your healthcare professional scope.
