Chapter 1 Flashcards

1
Q

What is EBP? What does EBP help do?

A

Evidenced Based Practice. It is a process used by health-care professionals to make clinical decisions to answer clinical questions. EBP is based on research evidence or findings. It helps to make informed decisions.

Q

What is the Researcher Pathway?

A

The researcher pathway is a framework and path which denotes different levels of research comprehension and ability to collect and interpret data. It consists of 5 levels. Level 1 - 3 are ascending research users, Level 4 - 5 are producers of research. We are expected to reach level 2 by the end of our BSN program.

Q

Here is a definition of EBP:

A

EBP is a problem-solving approach to the delivery of health care that integrates the best evidence from well-designed studies and patient care data, and combines it with patient preferences and values and nurse expertise.

Q

What is a systematic review? Why is it important?

A

A systematic review is the process of asking clinical questions and doing a structured and organized search for theory-based information. Then reviewing the results from that research and reaching a conclusion about implications for practice.

Q

What is research utilization?

A

The use of research in practice. Understanding the language and the process of research, coupled with clinical experience, allowing contribution to a research team.

Q

What is the evidence-based bridge theory?

A

The theory states that there is a gap that exists between available research (evidence based information) and the need for active application of this research to ensure positive growth and/or change in an individuals professional environment.

Q

What are three EBP models? What is the overall purpose of EBP models?

A

The Iowa Model, The Ottawa Model, and Joanna Briggs Institute model. EBP models help validate and apply EBI into healthcare practice.

Q

When should you seek evidence? (What are the 3 conditions in health-care setting)

A
  1. Something occurs out of the ordinary.
  2. Outcomes of care differ in one or more patients without clear reason.
  3. Need to develop a policy, procedure, or standard for care.

16
Q

What is PICO used for? What does PICO stand for?

A

PICO is used to design clinical questions. P - population, I - Intervention, C - Comparison, O - Outcomes

17
Q

Define research process?

A

A set of systematic processes that formalize the development of evidence.

18
Q

What is Health-Care Research?

A

The systematic gathering of information to gain, expand, or validate knowledge about health and responses to health problems. EBP uses EBI to plan implement quality care.

19
Q

What is knowledge?

A

What is understood and recognized about a subject.

20
Q

What are printed indexes?

A

Written lists of professional articles that are organized and categorized by topic and author.

21
Q

What is an abstract? What are come characteristics of an abstract?

A

A summary or condensed version of a research report. They identify the research question and the general approach taken to implement that research. I also briefly describes one or two of the most important findings.

22
Q

How should abstracts be used? What should you not use them for?

A

An important source of evidence and can be used to narrow down which research to read and use. They should not be used to provide a level of understanding of the research that would support clinical decision making.

23
Q

What is a systematic review?

A

A systematic review gathers reports of research studies which have already been completed that address a particular research question, then draw conclusions about what is know.
