Chapter 1 Flashcards
Cell theory
Fundamental unifying concept of biology, cells are the basic unit structure of every living thing and all cells come from other cells
Unicellular
Simple
Multicellular
Complex
Prokaryotic cells
- exclusive to bacteria and archaea
* NO nucleus, or other membrane closed organelles
Stimuli
Physical or chemical changes in external or internal environment
Biological growth
Increase in size of individual cells and number of cells, or both
Development
Includes all changes in an organisms life
Metabolism
All chemical activities that take place in an organism.
for nutrition, growth, energy
Homeostasis
Regulated metabolic process that maintains an appropriate, balanced internal environment
Asexual reproduction
Offspring has the same genes as single parent, variation only occurs by mutation
Sexual reproduction
Offspring are produced with egg and sperm
Characteristics of life
- Organized cellular structure
- response to stimuli
- growth and development
- self regulated metabolism
- energy processing
- reproduction
DNA
transmits information from one generation to the next. Contains “blueprints” for protein
Genes
Control development and function of organism
Proteins
Large molecules important in determining the structure and function of cells and tissues
Neurotransmitters
transmit information by electrical impulses and chemical compounds
Autotrophs
Produce their own food from simple raw materials
Photosynthesis
Transforms light energy into chemical energy stored in chemical bonds of food
Consumers (heterotrophs)
Obtain energy by breaking down food molecules produced in photosynthesis
Decomposers
Obtain nutrients by breaking down non living organic material
Evolution
results in populations changing overtime
Species
group of organisms with similar structure, function, and behavior. capable of breeding and producing offspring
Dear King Phillip Came Over For Great Spaghetti
Domain Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species
3 domains
Bacteria
Archaea
Eukarya
Adaptation
Involves changes in populations not individuals.
Mutations
Chemical or physical changes in DNA that can be inherited
