Chapter 1 Flashcards
Science is divided into the following branches
Physics
Chemistry
Biology
What is the study of Physics?
Study of matter, forces and energy
What is the study of Chemistry?
Study of structure, properties and changes of substances
What is the study of Biology?
Study of living things
A scientist studies and practices science through scientific inquiry involving
Attitudes
Skills
Processes
What are the proper attitudes required
Creative Cooperative Curious Humble Imaginative Objective Open Minded Perseverance Responsible Truthful
How is being creative important?
Thinking out of the box to resolve problems
How is being cooperative important?
Working as a team and sharing information with each other, building new research and observations
How is being curious important?
Continuously asking ‘why’ sourcing for solution and explanation
How is being humble important?
Willing to accept their wrongs and change their ideas
How is being imaginative important?
Generate possibilities about the things that they cannot see or don’t know
How is being open minded important?
Not bias and open to new ideas at the same time not believing that all read and discovered is true
How is being perseverance important?
Determination
How is being responsible important?
Ensure that we dot harm or destroy endangered animals or plants
How is being truthful important?
Honest whilst recording data through experiment
What are the skills needed in Science?
Posing questions Observing Measuring Communication Inferring Predicting Formulating hypothesis Thinking skilld
What is step 1 in conducting experiments?
The hypothesis or aim of experiment
What is step 2 in conducting experiments?
Planning of experiment
What is step 3 in conducting experiments?
Method
What is step 4 in conducting experiments?
Recording result
What is step 5 in conducting experiments?
Conclusion, inferring from result
What is step 6 in conducting experiments?
Evaluate, to state limitation and suggest in which way the experiment can be improved
What are the types of hazardous symbols?
Corrosive Explosive Flammable Harmful Poisonous Radioactive
What are common apparatus in science labs?
test tube conical flask tripod stand filter funnel measuring cylinder evaporating dish beaker restort stand dropper
What is the first step in dealing with bunsen burner?
Ensure connect to gas tap with rubber tubing
What is the second step in dealing with bunsen burner?
Turn the collar to close airhole
What is the third step in dealing with bunsen burner?
Hold lighter near top of barrel
What is the fourth step in dealing with bunsen burner?
Turn on gas tap slowly
What is the fifth step in dealing with bunsen burner?
Ignite burner with lighter
What is the sixth step in dealing with bunsen burner?
Open airhole
What are the 2 types of flame that the bunsen burner produces
luminous
non luminous
When does a luminous flame occur?
When the air-hole is closed, little air passing hence does not burn completely
When does a non luminous flame occur?
When the air-hole is open, a steady stream of air enters hence gas burn completely
What are characteristics of luminous flame?
yellow weak and unsteady not very hot produces smoke and soot not suitable for heating
What are characteristics of non luminous flame?
blue strong and steady very hot does not produces smoke and soot suitable for heating
