The communication which takes place over some form of technology because the audience is so large that its members can not be grouped together in one place

One person communicating face to face with an audience

Intrapersonal Communication
Dyadic, occurs between two people
Interpersonal Communication
Concerns three or more people who interact and influence one another in the pursuit of a common interest
Group communication
Referred to as physical noise because it presents a physical barrier that prevents the message from getting through to the receiver
External Noise
Can be physiological or psychological
Internal noise
The place in which the communication occurs
Physical context
Can influence communication
Social context
The sender and receiver encodes and decodes simultaneously through feedback, communication is an ongoing process
Communication is circular
Includes verbal elements (context) and nonverbal elements (delivery) -What speakers say and the way they say it-
Message
The means by which the message gets from the sender to the receiver
Channel
Brings to the communication situation all of his or her communication skills, attitudes, knowledge, social system, and culture
Receiver
Translates the source’s message attaching meaning and understanding to the speaker’s message (verbal and nonverbal)
Decodes
Any verbal or nonverbal response to a source, such as a question from the audience, a puzzled look, or nod of agreement
Feedback
Helps to focus on the elements that must be operating effectively for communication to occur
The source-message-channel- receiver (SMCR)
Transmits a message through a channel to a receiver

Creates the message by putting ideas into words and actions
