Chapter 1 Flashcards
natural numbers
1, 2, 3, …
whole numbers
0, 1, 2, 3, …
integers
…, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, …
rational numbers
numbers that result when an integer is divided by a nonzero integer (7/9, 0.5, 4/1, -5/3)
irrational numbers
numbers with radicals or pi that are not rational numbers
commutative properties
a + b = b + a and ab = ba
associative properties
(a + b) + c = a + (b + c) and (ab)c = a(bc)
identity properties
a + 0 = a and 0 + a = a
a(1) = a and 1(a) = a
inverse properties
property of opposites: for each a, there is a unique real number -a such that: a + (-a) = 0 and (-a) + a = 0
property of reciprocals: for each a except 0, there is a unique real number 1/a such that: a(1/a) = 1 and 1/a(a) = 1
distributive property
a(b + c) = ab + ac and (b + c)a = ba + ca
