Globalization
Historical process involving a fundamental shift in human organization that links distant communities and expands the reach of power relations across regions and continents
Interconnectedness
The interweaving of human lives so that events in one region of the world have an effect on all or most other people.
Nation state
A political community in which the state claims legitimacy on the grounds it represents the nation. Although the term is widely used, no such entities exist.
Global politics
the politics of global social relations in which which the pursuit of power, interests, order and justice transcends regions and continents.
Nation
A group of people who recognize each other as sharing a common identity, with a focus on a homeland.
Non-governmental Organization (NGO)
Any group of people relating to each other regularly in a formal manner and engaging in collective action, provided that the activities are non-commercial, non-violent and not on the behalf of a government.
G20
Group of Twenty established in 1999 as a forum in which major advanced and emerging economies discuss global financial and economic matters.
International organization
Any institution with formal procedures and formal membership from three or more countries
International Monetary Fund (IMF)
An institution of 188 members providing extensive technical assistance and short-term flows of stabilization finance to any of those members experiencing distressed public finances.
Cooperation
Required in any situation where parties must act together in order to achieve a mutually acceptable outcome.
Interdependence
a condition where states are affected by the decisions taken by others.
Globalism
A growing collective awareness or consciousness of the world as a shared social space.
Time-space compression
The technologically induced erosion of distance and time giving the appearance of a world that is, in communication terms, shrinking
Deterritorialization
A process in which the organization of social activities is increasingly less constrained by geographical proximity and national territorial boundaries.
Internationalization
term used to denote high levels of international interaction and interdependence, most commonly with regard to the world economy.
Regionalization
growing interdependence between geographically contiguous states, as in the European Union.
European Union
Political and economic alliance formed by European Countries.
uneven globalization
describes the way in which contemporary globalization is unequally experienced across the world and among different social groups.
Imperialism
The practice of foreign conquest and rule in the context of global relations of hierarchy and subordination.
institutionalization
the degree to which networks or patterns of social interaction are formally constituted as organizations with specific purposes.
World Trade Organization
159 member permanent institution covering services, intellectual property and investment issues as well as pure merchandise trade, and it has a disputes settlement mechanism in order to enforce its free trade agenda.
Normative Structure
international relations theory traditionally defines structure in material terms, such as the distribution of power, and the treats structure as a constraint on actors.
