Chapter 1 Flashcards
1
Q
What is research?
A
combining what we know
with empirical data collection and analysis
to shed light on what we do not know
in order to make a claim about what we now know
2
Q
What are the goals of research?
A
Describe behavior
Determine causes of behavior
Predict behavior
Explain behavior
3
Q
What is quantitative?
A
Arises from hypotheses Relies on numerical measurement data are analyzed statistically Seeks to maintain generalizations Assumes a "disinterested" researcher
4
Q
What is qualitative?
A
- Describes data in non-numerical terms
- Arises from research questions
- acknowledges the researches affects the process through personal interests and biases
- Seeks to capture and represent the participant’s voice
- Values individual experiences
- Embraces multiple realities
5
Q
How can you ensure scholarly rigor?
A
Systematic (create and carefully follow a research plan)
Data Driven ( only report what you have data for)
Reductive Process (Make sense of large amounts of data for the reader)
Replication (Your process should be able to be repeated)
