Description of the formal institutions through which a land and its people are ruled.
Government
The belief that ordinary citizens can affect what government does, that they can take action to make government listen to them.
Political Efficacy
Informed and active membership in a political community.
Citizenship
System of government recognizes no formal limit but may nevertheless be restrained by the power of other social institutions.
Authoritarian
System of government in which the degree of control is even greater, where the government recognizes no formal limits on its power and seeks to absorb or eliminate other social institutions that might challenge it.
Totalitarian
Political system that permits citizens to play a significant part in the governmental process, usually through the election of key public officials.
Democracy
Under democracy, constitutional government is the norm, in that formal and effective limits are placed on the powers of the government.
Constitutional Government
Used to refer only to conflicts and struggles over the leadership, structure, and policies of government.
Politics
Influence over a government’s leadership, organization, or policies.
Power
System of government in which the populace selects representatives, who play a significant role in governmental decision making.
Representative Democracy or Republic
System that permits citizens to vote directly on laws and policies.
Direct Democracy
For Americans it means freedom from government control, and also economic freedom.
Liberty
Powers are defined and limited by a constitution.
Limited Government
An economic system in which the means of production and distribution are privately owned and operated for profit with minimal or no governmental interference.
Laissez-faire Capitalism
All people should have the freedom to use whatever talents and wealth they have to reach their fullest potential.
