15th ammendment
cant stop someone from voting because of race or previous servitude
military reconstruction act of 1867
1: divide the south into 5 military districts
2: qualified voters take part in electing delegate to state conventions
3: states had to give all rights to all citizens (equal rights) must ratify 14th ammendment
tenure of office act
if president wants to fire someone approved by the senate, the senate must approve to the firing

Secretary of war was a radical republican. Johnson fires stanton. senate said no. Johnson still told him to get out
Impeachment of Johnson
congress brings him up on charges known as articles of impeachment. senate votes and needs 2/3. he is found not guilty
klu klux klan
attack former slaves. goal was to defend social and political superiority of whites. put fear into former slaves and whites that supported them

Civil Rights Acts
Passed in response to the black codes in South. All persons born in US (excluding indians) have benefits of US citizenship. no one can discriminate by racce or religion. Johnson vetoes, congress overides veto
