Ethics
The branch of philosophy related to morals, moral principles, & moral judgments
Law
Rules or actions prescribed by an authority such as the federal government & the court system that a binding legal force
Utilitarianism
An ethical theory based on the principle of what is the greatest good for the greatest number of people
Virtuous
A character trait conforming to moral & ethical principles
Empathy
The ability to understand the feelings of others w/o actually experiencing, their pain or distress
Confidentiality
Refers to keeping all private info about a person(patient) & not disclosing it to a 3rd party w/o the patient’s written consent
Bioethicist
Persons who specialize in the field of bioethics
Applied Ethics
A practical application of moral standards that are meant to benefit the patient
Illegal Actions
Acts that are morally & ethically wrong in which requires the court system
Purpose of the Law
Rules or actions prescribed by an authority such as the federal government & the court system that have a binding legal force. Medical law addresses legal rights & obligations that affect patients & protect individual rights, including those of healthcare employees.
Medical Practice Acts
Laws established in all 50 states that define the practice of medicine as well as requirements & methods for licensure in a particular state
Unethical Acts
Actions that fall outside of what is considered morally right or proper for a person, a professional or an industry
Medical Ethics
Based on principles regulating the behavior of healthcare professionals, including practitioners such as physicians, nurses, & other allied healthcare professionals
Right-based Ethics
A natural rights ethical theory that places the primary emphasis on a person’s individual rights
Medical Professional Organizations
Dedicated to providing its members w/ the info & support necessary to be successful applicants
