Citizenship
Being a citizen involves belonging to a community.
Being an active citizen means being aware of your rights, acting responsibly, getting involved in the communities you belong to, influencing decisions that affect you, caring for others in your community
Active citizens
Adi Roche founded the Chernobyl Children’s Project that helps children that have been affected by the human-made disaster.
Seven concepts of CSPE
Rights and responsibilities, stewardship, democracy, interdependence, human dignity, law, development
Rights and responsibilities
Every human is entitled to basic rights, these rights are of a civic, social, cultural, economic and political nature, you’ll learn about these rights and the need to safeguard them, also learn that we have responsibilities towards others in our actions
Human dignity
Everyone has a right to live their life with dignity and be respected, if we are denied certain needs and rights we can experience a loss of human dignity, many individuals who experience this daily, it’s important to respect and value everyone no matter how different they are
Stewardship
We’re temporary owners or stewards of earth, it’s important that we look after our planet responsibly to ensure that vital nature resources are safeguarded for future generations, you’ll learn the importance of acting responsibly when it comes to caring for the planet, acting irresponsibly can damage it for future generations
Democracy
A form of government whereby citizens elect people to represent them and make decisions on their behalf, you will explore how democratic government operate you will discover how you have the power to bring about change by actively participating in democratic society
Law
Rules and laws are necessary if the rights of the individuals are to be protected and promoted, you will discover why we have laws, how they are made and upheld, and what happens when you ‘break, the law, you will learn about the law in Ireland and other countries
Development
Local, national, international communities are in constant state of change, change can have profound effects on individuals and communities at local, national, international levels, although most development is planned and aims to improve lives of individuals can sometimes have negative impact
Interdependence
Were all connected or linked to each other in some way at individual, local, national and global levels, linked to other countries by the food we eat, clothes we wear and things we use, interdependence is the word to describe these linkages, the actions and decisions we make in our country can have an effect on individuals and communities ij different countries, it’s a responsibility to ensure these effects are positive rather than negative

Assessment
60 / a report on an action project OR a course assessment book
40 / a written terminal examination
Action projects
Will learn how to carry out an action project over next three years, an action project involves you the student taking action on some issue you feel strongly about, some examples are : presenting a drama, fundraising, making presentations, tree planting, visits
